Dating: What We Really Think

represent™ magazine sat down and talked to teens about what they think of dating in this latest installment of "What We Really Think," a four part series on marriage, dating, relationships, and family.

r: How important is your family's input when it comes to dating relationships?

Female (16): If my parents don't like the guy I'm either interested in, or dating, then forget about it!  It may seem old school, but their opinion is important to me.

Male (15): I agree!  I also look to my sister a lot for her advice.  She has a great sense of a potential girlfriend's character and if that girl will be a good match for me.

Male (17): Family is number one, so obviously their input is huge.  I mean, my family is going to be there when things get tough for me…that girlfriend might not always be around though.

r: Do you feel any pressure from family members when looking for a potential bf/gf?

Male (17): Well, I feel pressure--but it's always positive.  I want to be a great example to my younger siblings, so I want to date someone that they see having a strong character and making healthy and smart choices.

Female (15): I agree, completely!  My brothers put positive pressure on me when it comes to my dating relationships.  They are always reminding me to make smart decisions--not to mention, they tend to intimidate a lot of guys!

r: How about your parents?  Any pressure there?

Male (15): Well, again, it's all positive pressure.  I want to make my parents proud--so I'm going to make sure that the girl I date is someone that they would get along with.

Female (18): Some parents want to have a lot of say about who you date…

Female (17): Yeah, like my parents!  I mean, they want to know everything that's going on…in school, with my friends, at work, and with my boyfriend!  But that's cool with me, 'cause that means that they trust me!

r: Who do you look for regarding dating advice?

Female (15): Well, I try to ask the people that know me best for their opinions…those people tend to be my friends, sister, and parents.

Male (17): My parents always have great advice when it comes to relationships.  Even though sometimes, I don't want to admit it!

Female (16): My older brother, who's in college, is a great ear for me.  He's already gone through high school and knows what it's like.  Plus, he knows the guys' perspective which gives me a lot of insight!
